Biofeedback is a process that enables an individual to learn how to change physiological activity for the purposes of improving health and performance. Precise instruments measure physiological activity such as brainwaves, heart function, breathing, muscle activity, and skin temperature. These instruments rapidly and accurately “feed back” information to the user. The presentation of this information — often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behavior — supports desired physiological changes. Over time, these changes can endure without continued use of an instrument.

Biofeedback has evolved from a fascination in the 1960s and 70s to a mainstream methodology today for treating certain medical conditions and improving human performance. This evolution has been driven by years of scientific research demonstrating that the mind and body are connected and that people can be taught to harness the power of this connection to change physical activity and improve health and function.
Neurofeedback is an advanced form of biofeedback whereby a person learns to control and modify brain electrical activity (neuronal activity). Some have referred to it as “physical therapy for the brain”. Depending upon the nature of the problem, a person learns to remediate brain activity in such a way that some or even most of the problem can be resolved. A small number of sensors (electrodes) are placed on the scalp and the electrical activity in one or more areas of the brain are projected onto a computer screen. The computer is then programmed in such a way that when brain activity is occurring in a certain desirable way, the computer responds with a reward (feedback).
This reward can take many forms. It can be something as simple as a bell ringing or a sound like a flute.
It can also be much more complex (and entertaining) such as moving an image; playing musical patterns composed by the brain or something else that triggers the reward by the brainwave activity.
Regardless of the nature of the reward, the goal is the same: It is to provide an exercise for the brain that will help it to improve.
